Saturday morning trips to the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market have become one of my very favorite weekend rituals. The insane variety of fresh produce grown within driving distance of San Francisco is incredible! Did you know that California grows nearly half of the fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in the U.S.? Crazy! Farming is actually a huge industry within California generating more than $100 billion in annual economic activity for the state (which is easy to forget when you’re living within a city!)

During our frequent farmer’s market trips we’ve become friendly with a few of the local farmers and love thinking up creative ways to use the fresh options available while shopping that week. Over the weekend we decided to finally pop a bottle of champagne and celebrate our new apartment and stocked up on some of our favorite varieties of California oranges to make some fresh squeezed juice for mimosas.

Think you need a fancy juicer to make your own juice? Think again! We recently grabbed a handheld citrus juicer off Amazon for under $10 which made it quick and easy to juice our citrus haul. For some variety we juiced three California oranges: the blood orange, the mandarin and the tangello, and kept each juice in a separate carafe for easy mixing.

The result? A serious upgrade to your usual mimosa thanks to the freshness of the juice and the taste variations of the fruit. Plus, how cute would a DIY mimosa be at your next brunch party?! You can learn more about California’s farming and ranching industry (aka where most of your fruits & vegetables come from!) here.
