The South Loop is a neighborhood that’s near and dear to my heart after calling Printer’s Row home for over two years and there’s honestly no one better to represent the ‘hood than Molly Page, friend and Instagrammer extraordinaire. Molly is actually the one who sold me on the neighborhood initially when we first met while I was touring my first Chicago apartment – she’s an architecture buff and is just full of knowledge about the city and its history.

So after traveling to Old Town, Lincoln Park, River North, Lakeview, Streeterville and Wicker Park, we’re headed down south to the South Loop with this month’s “Around Chicago” feature. Some of Molly’s favorite spots:

The thing about the South Loop is that some of the greatest parts of the neighborhood are not what would be considered “hidden gems.” We have Museum Campus, Soldier Field and the Auditorium Theatre right in our backyard. But those big names aren’t the only reason to love this steadily growing part of the city. The south loop has been through a few ups and probably even more downs. In fact, I’ve been told I couldn’t have convinced a cabbie to take me to my apartment 15 years ago! YIKES! But now, it’s one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the city.

I’ve called the south loop home for the last three years. I love living here because it’s incredibly close to the loop but much less congested than other neighborhoods we considered. It’s exciting to be part of a neighborhood that is forging ahead while still holding on to its history.

Here are a few things you shouldn’t miss if you find yourself in my neighborhood.

To Explore //

There’s something incredibly magical about the Prairie Avenue Historic Mansions. Prairie Ave is where Chicago’s elite lived at the end of the 19th century. A few of their beautiful homes have survived the many transitions the south loop has undergone over the years. This tree lined street is a beautiful place to explore and learn a little bit about some of those crazy rich folks that helped put Chicago on the map.

To Appreciate //

If you’re a fan of street art then the Wabash Art Corridor is a must see. Columbia College, Mayor Emanuel and several South Loop organizations have partnered to create an ever evolving collection of art on display along Wabash Avenue from Van Buren to Roosevelt.

To Listen //

Urban blues music has deep roots in Chicago. And certainly one of the most influential Chicago blues guitarists is Buddy Guy. Whether you’re a blues fanatic or just curious about Chicago’s history, Buddy Guy’s Legends is a must. Free acoustic sets at 6 p.m. on Saturdays make it even more tempting!

To Eat //

• Hands down, Eleven City Diner is one of my favorite spots in Chicago. It never disappoints. I’m a sucker for the Lox and Latke. But the 11 City French Toast will blow your mind too.
• I would have never discovered Chicago Curry House had a girlfriend not raved about it. It’s tucked away and almost hidden, but this little gem is a great spot for a tasty lunch.
• I hesitate to mention Opart Thai because I feel like it’s my little secret. This restaurant serves some of the best Thai food I’ve ever eaten and we always walk right in. I thoroughly recommend it, just don’t tell everyone.

To Sweat //

There’s no question that the lakefront path becomes considerably less congested south of museum campus. And though part of Northerly Island is currently under construction, the island (which is technically a peninsula and formerly an airport) is a terrific way to add an extra mile or two to your run or ride. Of course you’ll enjoy fantastic skyline and lakefront vistas while you run, but you can also check out some magnificent public art! Three sculptures known as Daphne Garden by local artist Dessa Kirk will keep you company while you explore this gorgeous spot.
